HIV/AIDS

“HIV/AIDS is not worse than cancer or diabetes. It’s only the name which is angry.” (translated from Kikuyu)

Gatanga Kiiga has many programs geared towards improving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS as well as educating the public to prevent further infection and eliminate stigma. As part of our approach to combating HIV/AIDS we tackle the future, present and past of the disease.

  • The future of the disease can be eliminated through education and prevention so we conduct educational outreaches and community awareness events.
  • Dealing with HIV/AIDS in the present involves ensuring that those who are positive receive treatment. We have a defaulter tracing program to find patients who have stopped taking drugs and bring them back to the facility as well as psychosocial support groups to provide patients with encouragement and support to live positively. Also, our kitchen garden project help patients to live a healthy lifestyle.
  • It is also important not to forget patients who contracted HIV/AIDS in the past. At Gatanga Kiiga we conduct home health care visits for those patients who are bedridden or in very poor health.
