Kitchen Garden Project

A community volunteer prepares a garden for planting.

Once a patient starts taking ARVs good nutrition becomes paramount. In order to promote food security and proper nutrition among people living with HIV/AIDS we have developed a kitchen garden project with assistance from ICAP funding.

We provide seeds for a variety of vegetables along with training by an agricultural expert to members of our psychosocial support groups. This year was our initial year of the project and we were able to plant 64 gardens. Unfortunately some of the gardens were hit hard by the heavy rains but many gardens flourished and the project was incredibly beneficial for these clients so we will redouble our efforts for the second round and hope for better weather.

Here’s what some clients had to say about the kitchen garden project:

“Before I didn’t know the benefits of nutrition but now I feel I will be healthy with the seeds. If we move in this same spirit we will be able to help each other more and more.”    -translated from Kikuyu

-Jane Njabi

“I’m HIV positive and I don’t fear telling people because I feel strong and I look even stronger than people who don’t have it. I feel comforted because I’m not alone. I don’t expect to be given by people in the village because now I am the one who is giving.” -translated from Kikuyu
