Lillian Wambui

Lillian is an orphan in the CCF WSN program. The WSN program offers supplemental assistance to orphans and Gatanga Kiiga runs the program in conjunction with Child Fund Kenya.

My name is Lillian Wambui. I was born on 19th 04, 1990 in Kiarutara village, Kariara location, and Gatanga division of Thika District in Central province of Kenya. My mother had only two children, me and my elder brother. My brother did not go to school since he took care of me after the death of my mother.

My mother who was unmarried died when I was very young that I don’t even know her, neither do I have anyone to tell me who my father was.

As I grew up my grandmother died after a long-term illness and I was left with my sickly grandfather who took care of me from childhood till now. My brother left home to look for employment and now survives as a matatu taut.

I have suffered psychologically for a long time since I have no one to call dad or mom neither do I have my grandmother who could be showing me the way forward. I felt that I don’t belong anywhere in the society, hated by nature, worthless and isolated, until when CCF through Gatanga Kiiga Home-based care invited all orphans for enrollment. I actually did not expect much from them since many people come with cameras, ask questions to/about orphans, with mountains of promises but never come back.

I am proud that CCF has given me secondary school bursary, uniform, treatment, blanket, text books, and frequent home visits, psychosocial support from Gatanga Kiiga HBC. Unless CCF paid secondary school fees for me, I could be out of school since my grandfather who is over 80 years is an accident survivor, has no fixed income and unable to work due to his age and health.

I now feel that I belong somewhere and appreciate the support I get from CCF which have brought a great change to my life. This has brought hope to me that is worth a smile. I have courage to say that if CCF support continues, orphans will do what other pupils with parents can do. The only major problem faced by orphans is school fees, insecurity/abuse and food security. If these issues are looked at, then the world will be habitable for us and we won’t feel like rejects on the earth.

CCF has come to save us and pray to God that it may stay here for long to own orphans and walk with us through this valley of loneliness.

Thanks you “WSN” CCF program.

Yours truly,

This orphan has continued with hardship. Her brother died of HIV/AIDS shortly after this letter was written and her grandfather passed away during her Form 4 exams. She is currently receiving continued support from CCF through vocational training sponsorship. She is enrolled in Nyaga Polytechnic studying hair and beauty. She is scheduled to graduate this year and we at Gatanga Kiiga are looking forward to seeing her success as she finds employment.
