A SUCCESS STORY AS TOLD BY DANIEL NDUNGU

Gatanga Kiiga Home-Based Care an NGO in Gatanga District has been in the forefront in helping the orphans, widows, the disabled and those infected and affected by HIV\AIDS. Through it’s coordinator Mr. Francis Chege Nguchita’ it has been able to reach and help more than 700 orphans where it provides them with relief food, school fees, and even school uniforms.

When I first learnt about the NGO, I was in Form Two back in the year 2005.Being a partial orphan I went to seek assistance from the NGO since I heard a problem, raising the school fees. I was warmly welcomed by Mr. Chege who promised me to do his best to ensure that I remained in school. He however asked me to register first as a beneficiary, which was free of charge.

A month after I visited the NGO, Mr. Chege came to the school where I was studying and issued me with a cheque that was worth 5000 shillings in the presence of the school Deputy Principal Mr. Macharia. As if this was not enough he asked me to take my younger siblings to his office for registration. Thereafter the NGO continued to support me with school fees, uniforms, food just to name but a few.

After I left the fourth Form, the organization gave me free computer training. They have also been very resourceful in Guidance and counseling which has helped many youths change their behaviors positively. The organization is also very vibrant in running youth empowerment projects that includes mushroom farming among other activities.

Currently I’m a Journalism student at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and the organization has continued to be supportive to me and they always help whenever need arises. Before I joined college they assisted me to raise the funds through community mobilization.

In addition Gatanga Kiiga Home-Based Care has helped other vulnerable youths to defeat all odds by taking them to the polytechnics where they do short courses like catering, carpentry, masonry, electrical installation, mechanics among others.

The NGO can also not be left out in matters of sensitizing people on HIV\AIDS where it has helped greatly to reduce cases of HIV\AIDS infection in the area. On top of that it distributes free condoms to the community in an effort to fight the HIV\AIDS pandemic.
